Put the stock front springs from my Miata on the rear struts of the Sentra to raise it up to a usable height, then cranked up the front coilover sleeves to level it out. Much more usable, still rides like shit.
Dat gap
Horrifyingly, the lugs nuts have been on the car backwards this whole time.
Plans for suspension are to buy a set of stock shocks and some 220/200 # front/rear lowering springs, then get a beefy rear sway bar with poly hardware. Should sort out the handling quite well.

I’ve done that backwards lug-nut thing before. It was my first car, and I thought that the taper’s aesthetic worked much better on the outside.
Derp.

This *is* how suspensioneermatating works. Can confirm.

...how old are the struts?
![]() 07/14/2016 at 12:03 |

Probably as old as the car, and all blown. The passenger front still dampens... barely, but the others are totally shot.

Ah shit... those lug nuts are my bad.
To be fair though I swapped the cheap auto zone chrome ones for those OEM ones like an hour before you got there.

Wow. I wonder if the longer travel will make it bounce more.

hahahaha, damn I was hoping it was some sketchy Cleveland tire shop.
so, aero mod? Pointy side out = faster.

Travel wasn’t altered (in the front), just the ride height. The rear... no telling. They don’t seem too bouncy actually.

Right, coilover sleeves. Either way...those stock struts should make a huge difference.

Stock struts + lowering springs is the setup I had on my Civic and it was great. Looked good, plenty of travel, never bottomed out even across some pretty terribad railroad crossings, and handled adequately. With a nice rear sway bar that Civic would have been a hell of a thing.

Those Miata springs probably aren’t too far off that 200# mark— I think they’re like 170. What are the stock fronts on the sentra?
![]() 07/14/2016 at 12:46 |

Stock fronts on the sentra are 120 or thereabouts. The problem with the miata springs is the ends are wrong and they’re totally the wrong diameter so it’s NOISY

Easier to get the torque wrench on...

Look at this fancy guy with his torque wrench.

Hey now... they may have been on the wrong way but at least they were tightened to precisely 80ish lb-ft

torque wrench on lug nuts, lol

Oh haha! Yeah, I can imagine that mismatched ratio would mess with things too. I’m rebuilding a suspension for the first time right now— I’ve done springs in the past but once you start pulling the whole thing apart it’s a whole different game. I’d say save up and get all the stuff at once— better to hit it in one go than piecemeal it; suspension work is such a PITA that it’s infurianting to do over-and-over again.
I like that your (apparent) “practical” car is a tiny Sentra. I’m totally tempted to trade my 4X4 Xterra for a 5-speed E30 325i coupe— but my fiance doesn’t want me to get rid of the “BeasTerra”... although if she got home and a first Gen Viper, S2000 or NSX was in the driveway and I still had savings I think she’d abide.

What's the deal with that castle nut? It doesn't appear to engage with the cotter pin.

My practical car/daily driver is anything but small. 1997 naturally aspirated Buick Riviera. The Sentra and Miata are both projects.

That’ll move some people! I’ve got a couple spare Fiat Spider rear springs— they’re about 4 1/2" wide, if those’ll work better for ya you’re welcome to ‘em.

Eh, I’m just going to wait a month then drop $200 on lowering springs and brand new shocks. Refresh the whole suspension.
